Don Kelly, a graduate of the Ed.D. program, was recently featured in a Birmingham News editorial.
http://blog.al.com/rdemonia/2009/11/change_comes_to_alabamas_two-y.html
"Don Kelly, who teaches at Central Alabama Community College and recently completed a doctorate in higher education administration, has literally written the book on two-year college corruption. His dissertation’s title says it all: “Unethical Leadership in Higher Education and the Precarious Journey to Recovery: A Case Study of the Alabama Community College System.” Kelly concludes, of course, that no amount of reform can prevent every corrupt act. More ominously, he contends some recent reforms concentrate power in the chancellor’s office and might make it easier for corruption to flourish if the wrong person has the job. Now, that’s scary. Fortunately, Kelly has solid ideas about lowering the risk. "

Tuition raised at Alabama community colleges
http://www.tuscaloosanews.com/article/20091023/NEWS/910229955/1007/NEWS02?Title=Tuition-raised-at-Alabama-Community-Colleges
From The Tuscaloosa News:
"The state Board of Education voted Thursday to increase tuition at Shelton State and Bevill State community colleges and other two-year schools in the spring, followed by two more rounds of increases. Board members said that because of proration and the recession, their only options were to increase tuition or cut services. They weren’t willing to do the latter.
“We are at a point we have no choice,” said board member Mary Jane Caylor. State board member Gary Warren of Haleyville said the choices weren’t appetizing. “We didn’t want to cut services,” Warren said. “We need to provide more services and keep going in times that are hard.” Two-year college presidents in West Alabama said a bad economy has forced cuts in the education budget, which in turn necessitated tuition increases. “It’s difficult when we want to provide access on the one hand and on the other side we are trying to maintain high-quality programs as the cost of those go up,” said Mark Heinrich, president of Shelton State Community College."
